Surfboard Program

From Landfill to Legacy - Reshaping the Future of Surfboard Waste

There comes a time in every surfboard’s life when the ride ends. The glass yellows, the foam softens, and the dings become deeper than the memories. For decades, these relics of our sessions — made often with an EPS foam core— have found their way into backyards, sheds and landfills. Slowly breaking down, leaching chemicals and impacting the environment. Far from the ocean and even farther from responsibility.

ReSurf’s Surfboard Program is on a mission to change the way surfboards are managed at their end-of-life. Based in Ucluelet, BC, ReSurf is Canada’s first sustainable & scaled model for surfboard disposal—focused on recycling, up-cycling, and innovation.

ReSurf’s Surfboard Program mission is to eliminate surfboard waste from Canada’s landfills by creating a dedicated, self-sustaining system for the recovery, recycling, and up-cycling EPS (expanded polystyrene) surfboards. This initiative tackles a critical gap in the surf industry by diverting thousands of pounds of material from the waste stream each year. Then reintroducing it back into the value chain—transforming old boards into new, purpose-driven materials.

By capturing Boards before they hit the dump, ReSurf is closing the loop and processing surfboard materials into new tangible & up-cycled resources through in-house operations and various key partnerships. Reimagined possibilities from the boards we once rode on.

This isn’t just environmentalism—it’s innovation. As surfers and ocean conservation advocates, it is to believe this program is about more than just waste—it’s about accountability. It’s the idea that if we take so much from the sea, we ought to take better care of what we leave behind. And in that space — between responsibility and stoke — ReSurf is carving a new line.

ReSurf is currently accepting EPS Soft Top surfboards at our shop location (1685 Peninsula Rd. Unit 5, Ucluelet BC, V0R3A0). Or at all BC Ocean Legacy landfill locations.

Our Program is designed in three steps.

  • Collection.

Our program starts with a drop-off and collection design that is both integrated into the local community & reaches out into the greater Vancouver area. We offer various drop-off locations for EPS soft top surfboard waste with various partners, such as Ocean Legacy. Our collection program allows Surfrider to gather as many end-of-life EPS Surfboard waste as possible to begin processing.

  • Processing.

After boards are collected and documented into our system, we split the EPS board into 4 parts. The EPE (Expanded polyethylene) or EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate) outer top layer, HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) bottom layer, Wood stringer(s), and finally the EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) core foam.

Each material is cleaned & collected in a separate pile to then send out for recycling with various industry partners.

  • Next Steps.

The final approach ReSurf has been developing is up-cycling & remanufacturing approaches with EPS and HDPE materials. Working with industry partners, a percentage of collected and densified EPS surfboard foam waste and HDPE plastic can then be re-processed into new up-cycled textiles for new products!
