The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. However, we have the power and the solutions necessary to turn the tide for the benefit of all of humanity and the blue planet we depend on. With our Climate Action Program, we are leading coastal and marine restoration projects that mitigate the climate crisis, support coastal climate adaptation and improve climate resiliency. Currently, Surfrider chapters are supporting dune restoration and kelp restoration on Vancouver Island (pictured on the left is dune restoration in collaboration with the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve in Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks)!

Growing Ocean Health with The Kelp Farm
We’re excited to announce a new partnership with The Kelp Farm in Barkley Sound, bringing together grassroots ocean conservation and sustainable aquaculture. Together, we’re working to support healthier coastal waters, restore marine habitat, and give our community new ways to connect with the ocean through hands-on, educational programming.
Our collaboration reached its first major milestone on Farm Install Day, when our leadership and field team traveled to the site to witness the deployment of the farm’s new kelp cultivation infrastructure. Spending the day alongside the ocean farmers gave us a chance to share knowledge, compare perspectives, and build the foundation for the work ahead.
Building on the momentum of the successful installation, the next phase of the partnership focuses on community impact. Launching in spring 2027, a series of public and student-centered educational opportunities will be hosted at the farm site. These tours will include hands-on site visits detailing carbon sequestration and habitat creation by seaweed ecosystems. Volunteers will also help with citizen science initiatives such as tracking local water quality, biodiversity and helping with annual coastal debris cleanup in the area.
